100 Doraemon Secret Gadgets Expo Jakarta

アンアンアン とってもだいすきドラえもん
If you live in Indonesia sometime during 1990s-2000s, chances are you have watched at least an episode of Doraemon on TV on a Sunday morning. Doraemon is an extremely popular manga/ anime series from Japan about a robotic blue cat who comes from the future to help Nobita Nobi -a clumsy human boy- to get through his childhood. Doraemon is the epitome of childhood of many Indonesians, so it’s no wonder that Jakarta becomes one of the destinations of the ‘Doraemon 100 Secret Gadgets Expo’.

‘Doraemon 100 Secret Gadgets Expo’ is held at Ancol Beach City Mall, Jakarta, from November 28, 2014 until March 8, 2015. It shows 100 Doraemon statues (too lazy to count whether it was really 100 statues... hahaha!); each Doraemon statue is created along with an object that comes out of his magic pocket. There are also statues of Nobita, Suneo, Giant, Shizuoka, and Jaiko. The best part? You get to take pictures with them as many as you like, so don’t forget to bring your tongsis a.k.a. monopod! If you don’t have one, well, you can always use tongbro! #IndonesianJoke

Doraemon 101: he once was yellow-skinned and had ears!

The statues come with a short explanation of the function of the object.

This one probably tops everyone’s wish list: Memory Bread! It would’ve made school one million times easier.

Doraemon angpao, anyone? Too bad it’s empty…

I’m actually not on board the Nobita-Shizuka ship (Dekisugi, duh)… but that’s beside the point… What I’m trying to say is that the expo also features their wedding, complete with cute white benches!

There are also some diorama-like sets. And dokodemo door!

Jaiko, Giant’s sister!

Of course, no expo is complete without merchandise…

For a split second, I thought these two are Harry Potter and Hermione Granger.

To be perfectly frank with you, I think the expo could’ve been a lot better. I’ve also read *coughonkaskuscough* some comparisons between the expo in Jakarta and the exact same expo overseas, and the quality of the exhibits are different. For Doraemon lovers it won’t dampen the experience by any means, but I honestly feel the expo is a little bit ‘meh’ -for a lack of a better word.
