Yi Xiang: Authentic Chinese Pio Restaurant

8:00 PM

Located at the heart of Jakarta's Chinatown is Yi Xiang, one of the few restaurants that truly have original roots from China. The cook’s family came all the way from Shenzhen, China. Even ordering is more efficient when done in Chinese language; they can only speak Bahasa Indonesia minimally. You can order through the waiter, but because of the language boundary, the waiter sometimes can’t perfectly communicate your order to the cook as well.

Yi Xiang’s speciality is pio/pioh, a dish made of the meat and shell of turtles. In Indonesia, it is said that the dish is made using green turtles, not the endangered soft-shelled turtles used in China. The turtle body parts will be poached in some Chinese herbs, goji berries, ginger, and God-knows what else. If you’re interested in trying pio, Yi Xiang suggests diners to reserve a day in advance, so they have plenty of time to prepare the soup to develop a more complex flavour.

THE NITTY GRITTY DETAILS
There are honestly not much to talk about the look of the restaurant. Yi Xiang is a small, simple restaurant; beside our table, there are only two more tables. However, they really take good care of the eating utensils. The utensils are actually sterilised and wrapped in a plastic! It’s kind of interesting, because even in high-class restaurants, we don’t really know what kind of sterilisation is done. Hats off to Yi Xiang!

THE FOOD
Chinese Tea (IDR 3k/cup)
The tea automatically will be served on your table, but there are other options available. If this your first time eating pio, the bitter Chinese tea is perfect to cleanse your palate, just in case you don’t like the dish.

Appetiser (IDR 15k/each)
For appetisers, there are nuts, pickles, seaweed, and some other stuffs that I do not really know. I only try the variety of nuts, which is really nice, especially the cashews. All of the appetisers come in a cling wrap-covered plates. This restaurant is definitely the most (visibly) hygienic restaurant I’ve ever visited.

Pio Tim Obat (IDR 170k/kg)
When ordering, simply tell them how many people would like to eat the pio; the restaurant will calculate how many kilos of ingredients they would need. The soup is served in a hot boiling pot that looks like a hot pot but is not a hot pot. This is my first time eating pio, and it’s honestly quite nice. Eating turtle met is different from eating chicken, beef, or pork; the meat itself is very soft, and the shell has a similar texture with kikil aka beef hooves—chewy and soft. Meanwhile, the clear soup tastes like a regular Chinese herbal soup. If you like them, you’ll like this too.

Yang Chow Fried Rice (IDR 75k)
Absolutely nice! While I’m not an overly huge fan of fried rice—even in household Chinese restaurants, where I think fried rice is either too salty or too plain most of the times—this one is pretty decent. The fried rice is completed with chops of mushroom, carrot, onion, and pork.

Stir Fry Bocai with Garlic (IDR 35k)
I’m sure most of you have experienced your stir fry vegetables cooked too long, causing the colours to become dark green and the texture too chewy. However, this one is cooked just right! The stem and the leafs are both cooked well, not too hard to eat but still has that crunch. It’s also not too salty. Perhaps a tad too heavy on the garlic side.

Fried Paikut (IDR 88k)
The main ingredient of this dish is pork ribs: fried with some herbs, then cooked in an oven with chopped leeks and black pepper. There is a very nice contrast between the delicate and tasty pork meat with the crispy outer skin, completed with a touch of spiciness from the black pepper. Very nice!

Fried Calamari (IDR 55k)
Saving the best for the last! This is one of the best fried calamaris I’ve ever tasted in my life. It’s crunchy, salty, spicy—simply the best! I’m a huge fan of fried calamari, so I almost always order this dish in every seafood restaurant. Please believe me when this fried calamari is divine.

Gui Ling Gao (Free)
Do you know that gui ling gao is traditionally made from turtle shells? However, Yi Xiang serves a somewhat more modern version of gui ling gao, made from grass jelly. The taste is okay.

Overall, I really like eating at Yi Xiang. Pricewise, it is also good. I’d really like to go back here :D
