PappaJack Kopitiam

11:00 AM

In recent years, kopitiam has become a common view in Jakartans’ daily life. In some areas, such as Pasar Baru, you can find kopitiam at almost every corner of the street. In Malaysia and Singapore, kopitiam is where you would go for some breakfast, coffee, or casual chit chat. Kopitiam, which literally translates to coffee house, is now unofficially included on the list of tempat nongkrong anak Jakarta. Without further ado, say hello to PappaJack Kopitiam!

THE NITTY GRITTY DETAILS
With more than ten outlets, PappaJack Kopitiam has quickly become one of the most famous kopitiam(s) in Jabodetabek area. While classic kopitiam places usually focus on serving simple food—tea, coffee, eggs, toast—PappaJack also offers other varieties of food and drink.

In PappaJack Kelapa Gading, the building is cosily decorated in a modern, warm atmosphere—expect wood panels, brick look-a-like walls, and tegel kunci flooring. There are three floors; smoking is permitted on the second and the third floor. There is an outdoor smoking area on the second floor, while the third floor is equipped with a giant screen for nobar a.k.a. nonton bareng. For your convenience, the building is equipped with an elevator.

THE FOOD
Fried Rice Noodle (IDR 39k)
The Fried Rice Noodle is pretty good—tasty, balanced seasoning, not too spicy. This dish has prawns in it, so don’t forget to ask one without prawns if you don’t like them or are allergic.

Curry Laksa (IDR 45k)
This dish is… nice? The curry is quite tasty. Not too spicy. Not too memorable too, to be honest.

Half Boiled Eggs (IDR 15k)
I’m not too satisfied with the Half-Boiled Eggs. The consistency seems to be off, perhaps it simply needs a few more cooking time? It still tastes good when eaten with a little bit of pepper and salt. A friend told me that original kopitiam(s) in Malaysia and Singapore serve their Half Boiled Eggs with salty soy sauce. Not this one though.

Teh (Tarik) (IDR 25k)
When you order “tea” at PappaJack, you will get milky Teh Tarik instead of regular tea. Perhaps that’s just the way it is in traditional kopitiam(s)? I’m not sure, honestly. So if you wish to get regular black tea, don’t forget to reaffirm it to the waiter. The Teh Tarik served tastes quite bland and bitter; it’s not really my cup of tea (excuse the pun).

Hot Cham (IDR 23k)
This drink is a mix of milk, coffee, and mocha. It tastes okay. Kind of sweet.

Black Sesame Smoothies (IDR 42k)
What makes me interested this smoothie is black sesame; it is said to be good for hair, especially in managing hair loss. This smoothie, however, tastes very sweet. When you have sweet tooth and love cold drinks, perhaps you will like it better than I do.

THE VERDICT
I’m pretty satisfied with PappaJack’s food recommendation. While the overall taste is average and some dishes taste better than the others, the place is cosy and the price is friendly—those are enough reasons to come back again.
