Sumpah Pemuda, which literally translates to “Youth Pledge” is one of the most important events in the history of Indonesia. Declared on October 28, 1928, it propels the youth movement towards Indonesia’s independence. The pledge says:
We the sons and daughters of Indonesia, acknowledge one motherland, Indonesia / We the sons and daughters of Indonesia, acknowledge one nation, the nation of Indonesia / We the sons and daughters of Indonesia, respect the language of unity, Indonesian (Translation Source: Wikipedia)
To celebrate this day, today’s blog post is going to be about my visit to Museum Sumpah Pemuda, Kramat, Jakarta.

If you live in Indonesia sometime during 1990s-2000s, chances are you have watched at least an episode of Doraemon on TV on a Sunday morning. Doraemon is an extremely popular manga/ anime series from Japan about a robotic blue cat who comes from the future to help Nobita Nobi -a clumsy human boy- to get through his childhood. Doraemon is the epitome of childhood of many Indonesians, so it’s no wonder that Jakarta becomes one of the destinations of the ‘Doraemon 100 Secret Gadgets Expo’.
Thousand Islands (Kepulauan Seribu) are a set of islands stretching from Jakarta Bay to Java Sea and are in fact the northernmost part of the Special Capital Region of Jakarta, Indonesia. Most people who live in Jakarta must know about Thousand Islands, but more often than not, they’ll think about dirty brownie ocean with an awful smell. Will you believe me if I told you there is in fact a sweet, short, and fun escape in Thousand Islands? Where you can go for two days and you can have as much fun as a 3-4 days holiday? The answer is YES, you shall believe me *muahaha*! Ehem. Anyhow, what I’m talking about is Harapan Island, an island located in the Thousand Islands.
