Slice of Heaven, Grand Indonesia
8:00 PM
Oh, Grand Indonesia. Sometimes I can’t keep up with all the new restaurants and cafés that pop out at this giant of a mall in Central Jakarta! While Slice of Heaven is ‘relatively old’ compared to other even newer establishments, I only had a chance to try it recently. Slice of Heaven is a pretty difficult name to live up to, so I had to remind myself to keep my expectations in check. This is how it turned out! :D
THE NITTY GRITTY DETAILS
Slice of Heaven is located right next to Q Billiard, 5th floor of Grand Indonesia West Mall. The restaurant is in fact connected directly to the billiard place in the inside; it makes me wonder whether they have the same owner. If I had to describe the place in one word, ‘cute’ would be it. Decorated in wood, tiffany blue sofas (or minty green —can’t really tell the difference honestly), white chairs, and wickedly crafty lamps, Slice of Heven is cute.
On the downside, it surprises me a little bit —considering Slice of Heaven is not an old restaurant— that I find stains on the sofa. The stains are not that bad, but they are there nonetheless. The table is also a little bit wobbly. But the service is super good! The staffs are all smiley and informative about ongoing promotions. It definitely makes up for the stains and the wobble!
THE FOOD
Slice of Heaven defines itself as a modern Japanese-Italian Cafe, and it certainly shows in the menu. It offers some pasta, Japanese-inspired dishes (honey toast, hamburg, karaage), and cafe essentials such as salad, waffles, and pancakes.
Hamburg Set (IDR 85k) consists of rice, Japanese-style ‘hamburg’ aka hamburger beef patty, baked potatoes, and salad with mayo. The portion is small compared to its price, but the taste is acceptable. The beef patty is sprinkled up with some teriyaki sauce… A very salty teriyaki sauce —that is probably the one thing I hate about this dish.
I haven’t had mac & cheese for a long time, so I was ecstatic to find Mac & Cheese (IDR 75k - contains pork) on Slice of Heaven’s menu! This mac & cheese is made of macaroni, cheese (my bet is on mozzarella and an unknown-cheese-soupy-thing-on-top), spring onions, and the crunchiest bacon bits. I love it, though I would have loved it more if I had shared it. The portion is quite generous, therefore —similar to every cheese dish out there— it makes me slightly nauseous after ten spoons.
Tofu Beef Cheese (IDR 75k) is an ‘oven-baked Japanese tofu and minced beef served on a hotplate’. Although the cute presentation on a hotplate is definitely a plus, I can’t decide whether it is really cooked on that hotplate or the hotplate is just a gimmick. To put it simply, it’s an okay-tasting tofu bolognaise dish.
Ice Lemon Tea (IDR 25k) is, well, the usual lemon tea. Refreshing, sweet, sour lemon tea. Should’ve asked for a separate sugar syrup though. On a completely random note, I wonder why I’ve always forgotten to ask for a separate sugar syrup, because 9 out of 10 ice lemon tea in restaurants are too sweet to me. This is no exception.
Regular Tea (IDR 23k) comes out in a cute glass teapot and a cup. One perhaps should not think of the sad fact that the price is possibly ten times the price of hot water and a Lipton teabag.
THE VERDICT
I frankly don’t think that Slice of Heaven is slice of heaven; do you get what I mean? The price is also a bit steep compared to other similar restaurants in Grand Indonesia. But it is indeed a nice place to eat and the food is satisfactory, so I might come back in the future.
