Maroon 5 V Concert Experience at Singapore F1 Grand Prix
9:00 AM
Ever since This Love was released 13 years ago, I’ve been a fan of Maroon 5—and yes, admittedly, of Adam Levine. My musical tastes have gone through many periods of changes, yet Maroon 5 remains one of those few that stay in my playlist. Even when their musical direction has changed a lot since Songs About Jane. Even if I hated some of their songs.
Maroon 5 has come to Indonesia for concerts a couple of times, yet time hasn’t seemed to be my friend; I had prior engagements each and every time they came. At the time I finally managed to snatch a ticket of the Indonesian leg of the V tour, the concert was freaking cancelled! That was why when the offer to attend Maroon 5’s concert at Singapore F1 Grand Prix on September 19, 2015 arose with reasonable budgets, I barely thought twice.
The concert was held at The Padang, a huge field with open-air stage right next to the Marina Bay street circuit. The closest MRT station to it is City Hall, and from there you still have to walk for 10-15 minutes, depending on “human traffic”. There was this huge screen where visitors of The Padang could watch the grand prix, but I was too excited to see Maroon 5 to really pay attention to the qualification.
While this was not my first time attending a concert by myself, it certainly was still a unique experience. The concert started at 11:00 PM (PM!) local time, and I arrived at the venue at 5:00 PM. I didn’t dare to enter the foremost mosh pit area for fear of not being able to go to the toilet and not being able to breathe properly—especially because I was travelling alone. So I settled for the second best place: right behind the railing of the zone after the mosh pit.
During my six-hour wait, I made friends with two Singaporean ladies, as well as a Thai lady and her Canadian boyfriend. Thanks to that, I was able to somewhat pass the time in fun and went home not only with memories of Maroon 5, but also with memories of random encounters with kind strangers. Plus, they helped to secure my place when I went to the toilet. How awesome was that?
The concert itself was a lot of fun—it felt like a ninety-minute mass karaoke session together with thousands of attendees. The duration felt a little bit short, particularly due to the fact I would have liked more interaction between members of Maroon 5 with the concert-goers; there was very little time in between songs. It was also such a shame they didn’t perform Lost Stars; I was really waiting for it. My favourite part? Sunday Morning. It is one of my favourite songs ever—I have great memories with it—and Adam sounded really lovely.
Another notable part was when Adam *sigh* took of his shirt. When he first came out to the stage, he was wearing a shirt and an undershirt. Girls screamed. Then things started to heat up and he took of his shirt. Girls screamed a little bit louder. Then he took off his white wife beater, leaving his sweaty tattoo-clad torso bare for all to see. While playing a hot pink electric guitar. And the camera zoomed very closely to it. Singapore, thank you for being hot and humid.
Oh, in case anyone is wondering, Sebastian Vettel won the grand prix.
