Tips For Spending Weekend At Taman Safari Cisarua… and Animal Picture Spam

8:00 PM

"Dahling, aren't we fabulous?"

Last month we went to Taman Safari Cisarua, located at the feet of Mount Pangrango, with a bunch of our high school friends as a part of our annual gathering. Taman Safari, literally translates to “safari park”, is an animal conservation centre where visitors can see and interact with animals in their habitat. Running Man fans may recognize Taman Safari from one of their episodes shot in Indonesia. The journey to Taman Safari only took more or less 90 minutes by car from Jakarta and none of us had been there for more than ten years, therefore, we decided that it was the perfect location to breathe some fresh air and the perfect time to get reacquainted with Taman Safari.

Since our last visit, Taman Safari have opened two new branches in East Java and Bali, and the one in Cisarua has gone through major improvements. We were delighted to see towering lush green trees, revamped amusement park section, lots of animal shows, and most importantly: healthy, well-fed fat animals. It’s not that the animals weren’t healthy in the past, but if our memories serve us correctly, now they seem healthier and happier with curves at all the right places (think Gloria in Madagascar :D).

No worries Zebra, we love you just the way you are. Don't diet, okay?

And now we’re going to share six tips in the hope of making your journey to Taman Safari more enjoyable!

1. Always bring an umbrella and a jacket
Our weekend getaway was a little bit dampened by the rain in the afternoon (what’s with our trips and rains, huh?). The rain didn’t last very long -only 45 minutes to 1 hour- but it was pouring, windy, and definitely enough to give us tropical creatures chills that we could feel in our bones! The weather was quite temperamental, the next day was sunny and hence be prepared for all kinds of situation.

2. Utilize the free bus service
If you were too lazy to drive around Taman Safari, you could always choose to hop on the free bus service near the gates (like we did). The disadvantage is you won’t be able to feed the animals because the windows can’t be opened, while the advantage is the bus driver will talk about the animals during the drive, so you’ll get a glimpse of their life, characteristics, and personalities.

3. Stay for a night and book in advance
To experience both Safari Day and Safari Night, it is better to spend a night at the area. You can either stay at numerous hotels all over Puncak area or stay within the Safari area. We chose to stay at Safari Lodge, a bungalow within the Safari area because it has the benefits of easier transportation and park fee discount (approximately 30%). Our booking was made three months in advance. If you were travelling in a smaller group (2-3 persons), Safari Caravan would be a great option.

4. Bring your own carrots from home
To tell the truth, this point is controversial. We could’ve sworn we saw a sign saying “Do Not Feed The Animals”, but the practice of feeding animals (especially zebras, deers, and camels- not lions and tigers, obviously) at Taman Safari has been going for as long as we can remember. We also saw a couple of Taman Safari Staffs nearby zebra herds who were munching carrots from the visitors and they let them be. So it should be okay, right? Anyway, if you wanted to feed carrots to the animals, it would be better to bring the carrots from home or buy them far away from Taman Safari. Carrot price near Taman Safari has skyrocketed!

5. Allocate money for taking pictures at Baby Zoo
Aside from money for park fees, accommodation, and food, allocate some amount for taking pictures with animals at Baby Zoo! You can choose between orang utan, baby tiger, baby bengal tiger, and baby lion. Each picture costs around IDR 20k

6. Pay attention to “one way” hours
At certain hours on Saturdays and Sundays, Jalan Puncak Raya -the main road you’d have to pass to reach Taman Safari- undergoes one way traffic.
9am - 11.30am: one way towards Puncak
3pm - 5/6pm: one way from Puncak

Enough with the tips, now it’s time for animal picture spam!

Taman Safari celebrated its 24th birthday this year. Throughout those years, they have been continuously improving the health and wellbeing of the animals, as well as the overall condition of the park. In fact, two pandas are coming to Taman Safari real soon! Let’s keep our fingers crossed that the process goes smoothly and the pandas will be able to feel comfortable just like back at home! :)
