Eating Myself Into Oblivion in Penang, Malaysia

8:20 AM

Life had gone haywire just before the scheduled trip to Penang and I got no time to plan at all. Thus, I was in for a pleasant surprise when I found out that Penang is apparently dubbed as the “food capital” of Malaysia. My, how Penang did deliver! From street food to random restaurants, day to night, Penang did not let me experience any (extremely) bad food. Instead, some food I’ve tasted were really awesome that I consider going back in the future just to have another plate.

Tiger Char Kway Teow \ RM 5.50
Here are the lists of cuisines you'd find in this post:
* Tiger char kway teow and lor bak at Kafe Ping Hooi
* Oyster omelette at Kedai Kopi Seng Thor
* Penang Road Teochew Cendol
* Asam laksa at Pasar Air Itam
* Dim sum at De Tai Tong Cafe
* Nasi kandar Line Clear
(Holy Moly it’s going to be long!)

First up is Tiger Char Kway Teow (CKT) pictured above! No worries, there is no tiger meat in the kway teow, Tiger is the name of the CKT booth located at Kafe Ping Hooi. I ordered the duck egg CKT, it supposedly made the dish tastier compared to when using chicken egg. Though I can’t confirm nor deny that statement, the duck egg CKT was indeed very nice! The texture and taste of the kway teow was just right, you could feel the slight char flavour. The dish was topped with some oysters, juicy prawns, and fresh bean sprouts. At Kafe Ping Hooi, I also tried their lor bak, some type of fried minced pork. Yum!
Lor Bak \ RM 6

Next is the oyster omelette at Kedai Kopi Seng Thor! Being used to fluffy omelettes with fresh veggies and a touch of cheese, I was kinda shocked to find this dish so dark and crispy. The oyster (white quail-egg-shaped stuffs on the picture) added a lovely counterbalance to the crunch through its watery texture; it was fresh and not fishy at all, which was my initial concern.

Oyster Omelette \ RM 10

I just knew Malaysia has its own version of cendol! It’s slightly different from Indonesian cendol. In my opinion, Malaysian cendol has more of a “dessert” feel to it because it uses lots  of shaved ice, whereas most Indonesian cendol has a “drink” feel to it because it uses less ice and is usually served in a glass with straw. The famous Penang Road Teochew Cendol was fresh and sweet (not overly so), simply perfect for a hot sunny day in Penang.

Sign that you're in the right place when looking for Penang Road Teochew Cendol!

De Tai Tong Cafe is a Chinese food restaurant well known for its dim sum and colourful interior. The atmosphere was really lively, I went there at around 9 pm and it was packed with customers! The dim sum was quite nice, however the har gow wrapping was a bit too thick for my liking.
De Tai Tong Dim Sum \ RM 29 for all of these and some more
Dim Sum cart, vintage style!

Asam laksa at Pasar Air Itam was my least favourite dish out of all of my food adventure in Penang, it’s simply not for everyone. I've found numerous blogs raving about this laksa, so perhaps it’s just a matter of taste. The broth was thick with a strong fish sauce smell. For me, the saving grace was the zesty lime that contributes to the overall sourness of the dish.
Asam laksa Pasar Air Itam \ RM 4

Last but definitely not least is the most amazing Nasi Kandar Line Clear, which honestly deserves a post of its own. Nasi kandar is a dish of steamed rice (may choose briyani rice if it suits your fancy), protein of your choice (eggs, chicken, prawns), some vegetables, and curry. I got mine with white rice, spiced fried chicken, and crazy big succulent prawns. It wasn't the prettiest dish in the world, but the taste, you’re asking? Oh My Goodness. SO GOOD. The curry was rich, full of spices, and oh so delicious! It was spicy and it caused me hiccups, but I didn’t care- I’ll gladly suffer more hiccups for it.
P.S. Legend has it that this particular nasi kandar restaurant is named Line Clear because there is always a queue, the line is never clear. (Thanks for the trivia, my friend Gurru!)
Nasi Kandar Line Clear \ RM 25 (price varies based on your serving)
Nasi Kandar Line Clear - How amazing is that line?

Overall, my tummy had the time of its life in Penang (my weight scale can vouch for it)! I realize there are still many untouched subjects when it comes to popular Penang food: Goodall Cafe, Gurney Drive Food Court, etc. But hey, there’s always next visit, right? :) What’s your favourite food in Penang? Kafe Ping Hooi

Kafe opens everyday, but Tiger CKT was closed when I first went there on Thursday, had to go back on Friday.
